Synopsis
Based on Vasil Bykov's unfinished novella of the same name. July 1941. A retreating military unit prepares to engage the Germans. There's complete chaos all around. The population of the Belarusian village of Lyubashi is partly fleeing with the troops, partly fleeing into the forest. The advancing Germans are also nearby. The battle rages, a continuous roar and the sound of exploding shells... And suddenly, all is quiet. The front has retreated further east.

Season 11E1Episode 1July 1941. A shell hits Serafima's house. Serafima buries the dead and finds the wounded Captain Khlebnikov. She hides him in a dugout. Later, a German deserter named Holtz joins them.2E2Episode 2The village is under occupation. The Jews are herded into the stables. Demidovich, a district committee member, comes to Serafima, and she takes him to the dugout. Serafima visits the family of Nokhim, a local photographer, in the ghetto. The dugout's residents attempt to free the ghetto prisoners, but the Jews refuse to follow them.3E3Episode 3A thief, Serafima's former fiancé, appears. He feeds Serafima, but works for the Germans. They are executed in the ghetto. Serafima saves Nokhim's little daughter.4E4Episode 4The police arrest Serafima and Demidovich. The partisans reach the dugout. Serafima and Khlebnikov escape by swimming across the river, but Serafima is killed by the Germans.
